The Voices of Oakland
This audio-only AR experience introduces the visitor to the history and architecture of the cemetery. The prototype for this experience was created using the DART (Designers Augmented Reality Toolkit) system, conceived and implemented in the AEL. Wearing headphones and carrying a portable computer and tracking device, the visitor walks among the graves and listens the voices of various historical figures. The visitor can tailor the experience to suit her interests through an optional, hand-held interface.
Voices has now been implemented using Argon, the AEL's augmented reality browser. The visitor needs only an iPhone or iPad, which provides the interface controls and the audio. In addition, Voices can use the "panorama" feature of Argon: this feature enables the user to enjoy an immersive visual experience without being present in the cemetery. The video below contains a description.
